The Game That Changed Cricket Forever

A fascinating short film that tells the story of the first ever one day international -
''The Game That Changed Cricket Forever''

The match was arranged following the first three days of the scheduled Melbourne Test being washed out.
The organisers were keen to cater for the cricket hungry crowd and came up with the idea of a 'one off' one day game. At time of writing (26th Jan 2013) a total of 3,328 One Day Internationals have been played.

Geoff Boycott received the first ever ODI ball to be bowled. He blocked it, as was expected, but from then on became somewhat confused by the new format and is seen in the film being caught hooking.
He had been going well until then, scoring 8 runs in 34 minutes off just 37 balls.

The match consisted of 40 - 8 ball overs and was based on the Gillette Cup rules that the England players were familiar with.

To everyone's surprise 46,000 spectators attended the match and the commercial potential of the format was realised.

  1. Interesting clip of the first ODI. Just check Thompson's back foot as he bowls to have Geoffrey caught hooking. Is that a no ball? Eddyinlancashire
